Odds for FCS football in its opening weekend

It’s a pretty big slate of games, highlighted by No. 5 South Dakota State and No. 3 Northern Iowa on Friday night.

The FCS football season returns in full this weekend, with plenty of games to get you set for the start of what should be a fun season that will have some twists and turns, but will determine an NCAA Championship team.

The highlight this weekend is on Friday night, when the No. 5 South Dakota State Jackrabbits head to the No. 3 Northern Iowa Panthers. Pierre Strong Jr. has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the last two season for the Rabbits, and Panthers sophomore quarterback Will McElvain will look to be the next passer from the MVC to make an NFL impact along with guys like Kurt Warner and Carson Wentz.

The No. 1 team in FCS, the North Dakota State Bison — champion in eight of the last nine years — take on the Youngstown State Penguins on Sunday afternoon (we’re getting plenty of Sunday football in FCS this season). While NDSU QB Trey Lance is off to the NFL Draft, the Bison are still the chalk to pick up yet another title in the FargoDome. North Dakota State has never lost more than one Missouri Valley Conference game in a season since joining the league in 2011.
