The biggest game of the first full FCS weekend is Friday night as the South Dakota State Jackrabbits take on the Northern Iowa Panthers in Cedar Falls, Iowa at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Jackrabbits finished 2019 at 8-5 and 5-4 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (a.k.a. The SEC of FCS). Sophomore J’bore Gibbs is expected to start at quarterback, though SDSU hasn’t named a definitive starter. The Jackrabbits won the regular matchup of these teams in November of 2019, with a 38-7 win in Brookings. But UNI got revenge in the FCS Playoffs with a 13-10 in the second round.
UNI will start Will McElvain at quarterback, a redshirt sophomore that was the Preseason All-MVFC selection. The Panthers finished 10-5, 6-2 in the MVFC in 2019, and made it back to the quarterfinals of the Playoffs for the first time since 2019.
Both teams enter with veteran coaches, as John Stiegelmeier kicks off his 24th season at South Dakota State, and Mark Farley for the Panthers begins his 20th.
