Tracking the latest free agency rumors for Ryan Fitzpatrick

Fitzmagic is still in the mix for a starting gig in the NFL. Will he find it in free agency this season?

We are already into the thick of the NFL offseason and that means free agency. Teams can’t contact free agents until March 15th, but news of the top players will circulate as we close in on that starting point. Dak Prescott, Chris Godwin, Allen Robinson, and Kenny Golladay are just a few of the big names set to hit unrestricted free agency when the new league year opens on March 17th. One or more stands a good chance of signing a contract with their current team or being franchise tagged before then, but there is a chance one or more is taking calls when the tampering period opens on March 15th.

2020 in review

Ryan Fitzpatrick continued to be a net positive signal caller in 2020, but was replaced mid-season by rookie Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins are heavily invested in their early round pick and wanted to get as much out of that investment by getting him reps in live action. Fitpatrick ended up starting seven games and playing in nine and put up a 68.5 completion percentage for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He ran the ball 30 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns to round off a good but not great 2020.

Possible destinations

There are plenty of teams that would like to have Fitzpatrick at a back up’s salary

Do the Dolphins want to keep him?

They probably would like for him to be strictly a backup and help mentor Tagovailoa, but Fitzpatrick will move on in 2021 to try to win a starting job elsewhere. The Dolphins will sink or swim with their young quarterback in 2021.

Fantasy implications

Fitzpatrick always has some magic up his sleeve and is worthy of spot-starting in fantasy a few times each season. Even in a talent deficient offense in Miami, Fitz was able to throw a few strong fantasy games together. In Week’s 2 through 5, he was able to top 21 fantasy points in each game. But his fantasy upside will be tied to his new team and if he can get starts.
