In a closer-than-expected game on Friday night, the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers beat the Southern Illinois Salukis 60-52. These two teams are back at it just 17 hours after getting home from the gym last night because of the unusual scheduling in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
The Ramblers (20-4, 15-2 MVC) got 13 points from Braden Norris in the first game of the doubleheader, including 3-5 from three-point range. But on the whole Loyola was just 5-27 from downtown, which isn’t a great mark against a team that concedes an average of 53.2% eFG during the season. But winning 9-5 in offensive rebounds, and a 13-14 mark from the charity stripe, was enough to get the No. 1 team in America via adjusted defense according to KenPom another win.
SIU (11-12, 5-12 MVC) are looking for momentum heading into Arch Madness. The Salukis are fourth from last in America in offensive rebounding rate, but do make 37.4% of their shots from three-point range. Another big game from sophomore Steven Verplancken will be needed, who had 17 points on 5-5 shooting from three-point range yesterday. As a team the Salukis shot 12-20 from distance, and they’ll need a similar performance to get close again today.

The Best Bet
If Loyola wasn’t taking their opponent seriously enough before, they should today. SIU has lost five of seven, and likely won’t shoot the lights out as they did yesterday in a single-digit loss against one of America’s best defensive teams.
