No. 1 Gonzaga looking for games without success

The Zags are in need of dates. Do you know of a program that needs to lose a basketball game this week?

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the best team in college basketball according to the AP Poll and most statistical measures. But they’re struggling to maintain that status as several games have been canceled on them already.

They were scheduled to take on the Loyola Marymount Lions in West Coast Conference play, but COVID-19 issues in LMU’s program has canceled that game. Same goes for their tilt against Santa Clara on Saturday in The Kennel in Spokane. So what’s a dominant team to do in the interim?

Not much, apparently. No. 3 Villanova and Gonzaga were discussing playing a one-off battle this weekend, but the Wildcats need to make up some Big East games after COVID-19 issues of their own. VU will take on Georgetown instead. Then No. 5 Houston got involved, but a quick turnaround from their game against East Carolina on Wednesday, then a trip to Tampa to face South Florida early next week made flying to either Salt Lake City for a neutral site contest or to Spokane too challenging.

It might not be getting better anytime soon, as five teams in the 10-team WCC canceled games this weekend: LMU, Santa Clara, San Diego, San Francisco and Saint Mary’s. That’s bad for a team that wants to stay sharp heading into March.

So do you or someone you love know of a college basketball program in need of a pummeling and a paycheck this weekend? Give a call to the 509 area code, and see if taking on Gonzaga is right for you.
