Aaron Jones’ contract with the Green Bay Packers has come to an end, and the do-it-all running back is expected to be one of the more sought after free agents on the market ahead of the 2021-22 season. Jones is expected to receive interest from the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chicago Bears, according to Forbes’s Evan Massey.
Jones was clamoring for a major extension ahead of the 2020-21 season and had a strong contract year despite not getting the deal he desired. He ran for a career-high 1,104 yards and nine scores in 14 games while also recording 47 catches for 355 yards and two touchdowns. Green Bay cut down on Jones’ usage as the year went on by giving Jamaal Williams more touches, so his carries and touchdowns total dropped. Whether he’ll assume a larger role next season remains to be seen. A.J. Dillon showed some impressive moves at times in his rookie season.
The Dolphins, 49ers, Steelers, and Bear all have quality running backs on their rosters, and there’s no guarantee that Jones would be the lead back on any of the teams rumored to be interested in him. Beating out Myles Gaskin, David Montgomery, James Conner, or San Francisco’s talented running back group to secure top billing will be difficult.
