Dallas Cowboys 2021 free agency outlook

The Dallas Cowboys offseason will have a ton of eyeballs on it as they decide what the future is at the quarterback position. Dak Prescott missed most of last season with a devastating injury, and he’s technically a free agent after playing 2020 on the franchise tag. The Cowboys have a huge decision to make that may determine how the next few years will turn out for the organization.

Lost revenue due to COVID-19 will impact every team, but with so many free agents the likely drop in the league wide salary cap number could make things difficult. The 2020 number was around $198 million, while the 2021 number could drop to $180.5 million according to Over The Cap, but is subject to change.

Franchise/Transition Tag possibilities

This is the third season the Cowboys and Prescott will try to come to a deal, and another franchise tag could be a possibility. Signing him to a long-term deal could be a risk given Prescott’s injury when he suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle. He played in just five games last season, completing 68% of his passes for 1,856 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions.

Prescott was signed to the franchise tag in 2020 for $31.4 million, and it’s certainly possible the Cowboys go the exact same route this offseason before finally needing to decide whether to commit to Prescott long term.
