The WBO will look to crown a light heavyweight champion on Saturday, April 10th in an ESPN card in Las Vegas. Joe Smith Jr. will face off against Maxim Vlasov for the vacant WBO title. The Top Rank promoted event gets going at 10 p.m. ET. The fight was originally scheduled for February 13th, but was postponed after Vlasov tested positive for COVID-19.
Smith enters the fight with a 26-3 record and is coming off a ninth round TKO win over Eleider Alvarez in a WBO title elimination match. The WBO ranks Smith No. 1 among light heavyweight while The Ring Magazine ranks him fourth in the division. His most notable run was as WBC international light heavyweight champion that included an eighth round KO of retiring legend Bernard Hopkins. He last loss in March 2019, dropping a unanimous decision to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
Vlasov comes into the fight with a 45-3 record and last fought in November 2019 when he won a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Martey. He’s held various tertiary titles in the light heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions. He has won three straight fights since losing a unanimous decision to Krzysztof Glowacki in a fight for one of the WBO’s interim cruiserweight titles.
Smith was a -360 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook heading into the original fight weekend. In the two months since, he has climbed to a -435 favorite. Vlasov was +250 and now sits at +285 as the underdog.
