NBA MVP tracker: Should LeBron still be favored by this much?

The Lakers are back on track and LeBron James remains the favorite to win MVP. Should we be looking at other plays on DraftKings Sportsbook?

Golden State Warriors v Los Angeles Lakers

We’ve heading into the All-Star break, so that makes it basically the mid-way point of the 2020-21 NBA season. We’ll be rolling out our mid-season picks for each award, plus predictions for the East, West and NBA Finals. Most of the awards races aren’t very polarizing, though it is nice that the MVP race still seems very much up in the air. All of this despite LeBron James still be a decent favorite to win his fifth MVP award. Let’s take a look at the current odds and point out some trends.

We’re seeing mostly players increasing their odds to win MVP and it’s a few names that could legitimately make a run and win the award. Those players include Luka Doncic, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and the reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. All four players improved their MVP stock since the last update. It isn’t a huge jump as you’ll see in the table below, but with still so much uncertainty, it’s worth noting. I’m still of the thought that it’s LeBron’s award to lose but he will struggle to make a case if the Lakers keep losing here and there. If Anthony Davis returns and takes off, that also hurts James’ MVP case.

Doncic was the favorite at the beginning of the season and the Dallas Mavericks are pretty close to 100 percent healthy. Dallas is at 16-16 and has won 7 of the past 10 games. The Mavs have a few games to make up but are outside the playoff picture entering Monday’s action. Doncic is still carrying the team and will likely sneak into the playoffs or at least into the play-in tournament. If the Mavs can get anywhere close to the 4-6 seeds, Doncic will have led the way. If that ends up happening, we could see his MVP odds continue to climb back into the top 3. It isn’t like Nikola Jokic or Joel Embiid are getting that much hype still.

I still think the sleeper is Kawhi, who is quietly (shocker, I know) having his best NBA season. The Clippers will be in contention for the first overall seed in the West. If the Nuggets and Mavericks fall off, it could shift odds away from Jokic and Doncic. That would leave LeBron, Embiid and maybe Stephen Curry as the favorites. Curry is the scariest of the players below 10/1 in the race. He’s won multiple MVPs and the Dubs are playing good ball. Still, if Kawhi and the Clippers start ripping off wins and take the West from LeBron, that’d be a pretty strong case for an MVP.
