The second half of the NBA season is underway and we’ve got about two months before the play-in tournament at the end of May. At the beginning of the 2020-21 season, DraftKings Sportsbook opted to release win percentage betting totals rather than win totals given the shortened nature of the season. So now that we’re getting toward the end of the campaign, we’ll be tracking the NBA standings the rest of the season to see who hits their win percentage over and who falls short. Below is a table that we’ll be updating periodically throughout the second half. We’ll also provide some analysis with each update.
March 15 update — The Milwaukee Bucks are starting to make some moves in an attempt to reach their high expectations for this season. The Bucks are 24-14 heading into the week and are about 7 percent off of their preseason win percentage of 68.5.
Three other teams in the East have even more work than the Bucks to reach their win percentage marks. The Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat were all expected to finish at the top of the conference. The Raptors have lost five in a row and that dream is dwindling. The Heat are the biggest risers, having won four in a row and 9 of the past 10 games. The Celtics remain in the middle of the pack. All three teams have around 9-11 percent to make up in the win percentage department. Below is the table with the latest standings and percentages.
March 12 update — In our first installment, we’ll look at the three teams at the top of the table: the New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder. All three teams have exceeded expectations this season and are on a good pace to smash the over on their win percentage betting line.
The Knicks have had a transformation this season under new coach Tom Thibodeau. His no-BS attitude has made the Knicks playoff contenders in the East. It also transformed journeyman Julius Randle into an All-Star do-it-all. The Knicks don’t need to do much in the second half to reach the over.
The Hornets have a lot of young talent surrounded by two veterans in Terry Rozier and Gordon Hayward. The team is in contention to return to the postseason thanks to rookie LaMelo Ball, who has emerged since being inserted into the starting lineup. If this continues, Ball should run away with ROTY and the Hornets should get to the over.
The Thunder were expected to be one of the worst teams in the NBA after shipping out Chris Paul, Steven Adams and Dennis Schroder this season. Despite the subtraction and coaching change with Billy Donovan gone, OKC has remained competitive. The Thunder are one of the top teams ATS this season and are on track to get to the over.
