Free agent quarterback Jameis Winston is returning to New Orleans for one more season. He is signing a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, according to Shams Charania. Adam Schefter is reporting the deal is worth up to $12 million.
Winston’s last stint as a starter ended with him throwing for an amazing 30 interceptions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He even was passed over for the starting job in New Orleans by Taysom Hill while Drew Brees was out with a ribs injury last season. However, Winston and Hill will not compete to replace Brees, who announced his retirement over the weekend.
Winston’s deal likely is loaded with incentives and contains a limited amount of guaranteed money. If he ends up claiming the starting role, $12 million is a veritable bargain for a starter. If he loses out to Hill, he likely will not cost the Saints $12 million. The competition will open when the team returns for the offseason workout program in April.
