How and what to watch for No. 25 Wisconsin vs. Purdue

The Badgers have lost three of their last five and are limping to the finish line while Purdue picks up steam.

The Wisconsin Badgers are in a bit of a downward trend, losing three of their last five games, but things won’t get any easier as they take on the red-hot Purdue Boilermakers on Tuesday.

The Badgers (16-9, 10-8 B1G) are struggling a bit in recent weeks. Their defense has still been playing solid, allowing just 63 points per game to opponents this season, which ranks as the seventh-best in America according to KenPom. But offensively, over the last five games, they’re averaging just 63 points, a far cry from the 70 they’ve been averaging this season. The team is led by D’Mitrik Trice, who’s scoring 14.1 points per game. Wisconsin has a total of just two players averaging in double figures.

Purdue (16-8, 11-6 B1G) has been red-hot after a slightly slow start to the season, winning nine of their last 12 games overall, dating back to Jan. 8. The Boilermaker defense isn’t as elite as Wisconsin’s has been, but it’s still a top-15 unit, according to KenPom. They’re giving up just 66 points per game while scoring 71 in each contest on average. The offense is powered by Trevion Williams, who is scoring close to 16 points per game and he leads the team in boards, grabbing nine rebounds per game. Only one other player on the team is averaging double figures, with Sasha Stefanovic clocking in at 10 points per game.

KenPom gives Purdue a 57% chance to win this one and creep closer to the top of the Big Ten standings.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Purdue -2
Point Total: 130
Money line: Wisconsin +112, Purdue -136

  • The Badgers are 2-4 ATS in their last six games
  • Their defense is elite, making the under hit more often than not. It’s hit in six of their last seven contests.
  • For Purdue, there’s been a lot of low-scoring games too, the total has gone under in six of their last nine.
  • The Boilermakers have done a good job of covering the spread, going 9-2-1 ATS over their last 12 games.

The Best Bet

The team that wins this game will likely cover the spread. Purdue’s 9-1 home record should give it an edge in this game, so I think the Boilermakers will get the job done. Wisconsin is just one game over .500 on the road.

Pick: Purdue -2
