The No. 3 Baylor Bears survived a brutal battle in the Big 12 with a 94-89 win over the No. 6 West Virginia Mountaineers on Tuesday night in Morgantown, West Virginia. West Virginia closed as a four-point underdog, but failed to hang onto the cover in overtime.
Bears guard Jared Butler led all scorers with 25 points, including 5-11 from three-point range. In what was a physical contest, WVU was 28-32 from the free throw line, and Baylor 9-14.
It was a back-and-forth game until late in regulation, where no one could make anything with empty possession after empty possession. Butler’s driving layup with two seconds remaining seemed almost too easy, and tied the game at 81.
In overtime a layup by Davion Mitchell made it 90-89 with 57 seconds left, and the Mountaineers wouldn’t score again.
Miles McBride led WVU with 19 points on 5-14 shooting, and Sean McNeil added 18 on 7-11 from the floor.
The Bears officially wrapped up the Big 12 regular season championship. They have two more games this week that were scrapped earlier this season due to COVID-19; against streaking Oklahoma State on Thursday and Texas Tech on Sunday.
