No. 7 Oregon 20-6 (14-4 Pac-12):
First round: Advanced by forfeit of No. 10 VCU (COVID-19)
KenPom rating: 30 Overall, 14 Offense, 66 Defense
NET ranking: 33, (2-3 VS Quad 1)
Leading scorer: Eugene Omoruyi (16.7 ppg)
Key stat: Oregon makes 37.9% of their three-pointers, good for 19th in Division I
Oregon gets through thanks to something awful happening to VCU. It’s so unfortunate and no one wants to advance this way, but the Ducks now face one of the best offenses in college basketball in the Hawkeyes. UO only has one game against a Top 10 team in KenPom all season: a 72-58 loss at USC in mid-February. Many people have complained about the lack of depth in the Pac-12 this year, but they are 4-0 in this tournament so far.
No. 2 Iowa: 22-8 (14-6 Big Ten):
First round: Defeated No. 15 Grand Canyon 86-74
KenPom rating: 6 Overall, 2 Offense, 52 Defense
NET ranking: 6 (8-6 vs. Quad 1)
Leading scorer: Luka Garza (23.7 ppg)
The No. 2 seed Hawkeyes did not have much trouble with the No. 15 seed Grand Canyon Antelopes, defeating them 86-74 in the first round on Saturday night. Iowa have a record of 8-2 in their last 10 games.
Leading the Hawkeyes on Saturday was two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Luka Garza. The senior center was held to only eight points in the first half. However, he erupted for 16 in the second half, finishing with 24 points and six rebounds. Garza has now scored 20-plus points in 21 games this season (most in the NCAA). Joe Wieskamp added 16 points, while Jordan Bohannon had 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range.
The Hawkeyes shot 53.7% from the field and 45.5% from behind the arc, while holding the Antelopes to 26.9% shooting from distance.
