Arizona Cardinals sign AJ Green: Fantasy football fallout for 2021

We take a look at the fantasy football impact as AJ Green signs with the Arizona Cardinals ahead of the 2021 NFL Season.

The Arizona Cardinals officially signed AJ Green to a one-year, $8 million deal, adding another receiver to their already impressive group. Green is coming off somewhat of a down year in 2020, playing 16 games and only scoring two TDs while logging 523 yards. The seven-time Pro Bowler has spent all 10 seasons of his career with the Bengals and will be moving to a new team for the first time. The Cardinals also recently signed JJ Watt, setting them up for a potential real run at the Super Bowl next year.

WR AJ Green signing: Fantasy football impact

The 32-year-old Green amassed 65 touchdowns overall in Cincinnati, grabbing 649 catches and totaling 9,430 yards altogether. He completely missed the 2019 season with torn ligaments, but obviously made a comeback and was able to play 16 games in 2020.

Green should feel a little less pressure heading to the Cardinals where he won’t be expected to be the number one receiver on the field. He’ll be expected to be a WR3 behind current receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk. Larry Fitzgerald recently became a free agent, and the signing of Green heavily indicates that he won’t be back with Arizona for next season.

With most defenses expected to pay a lot of attention to Hopkins, Green could be freed up for some real production this next season. He’s got a whole ton of experience as a wide out, and he should be able to win the one-on-one matchups he’ll see in that spot opposite Hopkins. Green should fit any lineup as a decent WR3 option if he can get back on the upswing with his new team after a relatively poor 2020 season.
