Kyle Lowry stays with Toronto as the NBA Trade Deadline passes [UPDATE]

The NBA Trade Deadline is approaching on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET. There have been plenty of rumors and news surrounding some of the top players who could be moved before the buzzer. Toronto Raptors PG Kyle Lowry has been reported as one player who could be traded. Below is the latest news update for Lowry heading into the deadline.

UPDATE: March 25, post-deadline — So Lowry appears to have stayed with the Raptors past the deadline at 3 PM ET. This is likely because the price was way too high for the veteran guard, who now could walk in free agency in the offseason. This also could mean Lowry wants to remain with the team long-term (which could only be on a short-term deal).

UPDATE: March 25, 2:15 p.m. — The Lakers and Heat appear to be the frontrunners for Lowry, per Woj. The Raptors just traded Matt Thomas away to create a roster spot, which could be a precursor for a Lowry deal.

UPDATE: March 25, 1:07 p.m. — Apparently the Sixers could be out on Lowry now that they’ve acquired Hill, per Woj. We’ll see if this stands true. The Sixers are trying to offload Danny Green and he could land with the Warriors, per reports.

UPDATE: March 25, 12:45 p.m. — The Sixers are acquiring George Hill from the Thunder, per Shams Charania. This doesn’t mean the Sixers aren’t going to go after Lowry. It also could mean that. We don’t know yet. We’ll see what happens with Lowry. The asking price was reportedly very high.

UPDATE: March 25, 12:05 p.m. — Lowry is expected to be traded to the Sixers, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. Nothing is being reported or official as of now. This is just the expectation of the player. With the Orlando Magic already making it clear they are in a fire sale, we could see more teams try and recoup assets. Lowry could be the next big chip to fall before other deals are done.

UPDATE: March 25 10 a.m. ET — The Sixers, Lakers and Heat are all seriously engaged on PG Kyle Lowry, per The Athletic. This isn’t anything new. These three teams have already been reported as having interest in the veteran point guard out of Toronto. If Lowry is moved, it will be for a big package — something including a first-round pick and/or top prospect.

With the trade deadline less than 24 hours away, it appears as if it will be a three-team race for the services of Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski mentioned that the Los Angeles Lakers should not be ruled out in the Lowry trade talks.

This latest piece of news comes off the heels of Wojnarowski reporting on Tuesday night that the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat are interested in Lowry, but hesitant on how far they will go in a potential deal. If the Sixers want to acquire Lowry, they would have to give up either Matisse Thybulle or Tyrese Maxey, per Keith Pompey of Philadelphia Inquirer. But the Sixers are reportedly not willing to give up Thybulle.

Then when it comes to the Heat, Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca reported that second-year guard Tyler Herro is a sticking point in a potential deal for Lowry. It’s been widely reported that the Heat are preferred destination for the veteran point guard. But it seems as if the Heat are not keen on giving up Herro in a deal, where they would be getting rid of Duncan Robinson, who is scheduled to be a restricted free agent in the offseason.

That all being said, whichever team does end up trading for Lowry, they’ll likely have to agree to a two-year, $50 million extension in the offseason.
