How the NBA Trade Deadline impacted Celtics futures odds

We take a look at how the deadline deal to acquire Evan Fournier impacted Boston’s futures outlook on DraftKings Sportsbook.

The Boston Celtics have underperformed so far in 2020-21 and there wasn’t really any trade that could bail them out without mortgaging the future a bit. The Celtics remained reluctant to include Marcus Smart in any type of trade. That rang true before the NBA Trade Deadline on Thursday. The Celtics made a few minor moves but nothing that you’d considered extravagant. Boston still didn’t enough to move the needle a bit in terms of odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. Let’s take a look.

Boston Celtics odds

Championship odds: +3300
Odds to win East: +1600

So the Celtics saw their odds drop considerably. They went from 30/1 to win it all to 33/1 (I guess not considerably, but it’s notable enough). The Celtics also dropped from 12/1 to 16/1 to come out of the East. This has less to do with what the Celtics did and more to do with what other teams did. Boston added G Evan Fournier from the Orlando Magic. That was it. The Celts also shipped Daniel Theis out to the Chicago Bulls in the three-team trade that brought back Moritz Wagner. The team then included PG Jeff Teague in the Fournier deal.

So basically the Celtics shed some dead weight in Teague and Theis. We should see more Robert Williams in the front court, which isn’t bad. The Celtics should be active in the buyout market as well. Fournier brings in another scoring wing to help on offense. Boston can now run some interesting lineups with Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, Fournier and Jayson Tatum with Williams. Tristan Thompson is also still around. Overall, the Celtics have the pieces to make it out of the East. If Brad Stevens can get the group playing up to potential, that will make the difference. Not what Danny Ainge can or cannot do.
