The NCAA Women’s Tournament continues today, with two of the best freshmen in women’s basketball doing battle at 1 p.m. to open the second weekend of wall-to-wall hoops.
Paige Bueckers of UConn takes on Caitlin Clark of Iowa in a showdown of the stars of the Class of 2020. Bueckers gets 19.8 points per game with 6.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds as well. She’s got it all, and adds a bit of swagger that stands out for someone still new to the college game. She was first-team AP All-American, and is a big favorite to get to the Elite Eight today.
Clark is the leading scorer in all of Division I as a freshman with 27.4 points per game, and was the No. 2 player in last year’s class. She’s got a bigger role on the team from her home state (she’s from Des Moines) because her teammates quite simply aren’t as good, but her ability to do literally everything you need is unquestioned. Throw in six rebounds and 6.8 assists per game, and you’ve got a complete playmaker with a lightning-quick release on a jumper with parking lot range. She was second-team AP All-American.
Bueckers and Clark are old friends going back to their days on the AAU circuit and winning age-group World Cups for USA Basketball, but they’re also two of the most competitive women on the planet. This should be quite a show.
Here is where odds are opening for all of the third-round games in the 2021 NCAA Women’s Tournament from DraftKings Sportsbook ahead of tip-off on Saturday.
