The 2021 NBA Draft is expected to be held on July 29, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Monday afternoon. The NBA Finals are expected to end in early July. The NBA Draft Combine will take place from June 21-27, according to Shams. The NBA Draft Lottery will be on June 22. This gives us the full offseason schedule basically. Most of the time NBA Free Agency will begin shortly after the draft, so there’s a good chance that will start in early August.
Update: The NBA confirmed the date of the draft, the combine and the lottery. The draft will begin coverage on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET. The lottery will take place on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The 2021 NBA Draft class is expected to be relatively deep. We still have a handful of top prospects competing in the NCAA Tournament with the Elite Eight set to tip-off on Monday night. Evan Mobley, a forward for USC, was on display on Sunday night in a Sweet 16 win over Oregon. We’ve also seen other top prospects such as Franz Wagner on Michigan and Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell for the Baylor Bears. There are also a handful of top prospects competing in the G-League, including Jalen Green, Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix.
It will be interesting to see how things change over the summer. Obviously, last year the pandemic made it difficult to do any type of in-person Combine, which usually takes place in Chicago. This year, considering it will take place at the end of June and more people will be vaccinated, there’s a good chance the combine will have team personnel invited so scouts and GMs can get a better look at players.
