Quarterback prospect Justin Fields has kicked off Ohio State’s Pro Day with a splash by running a stunning 4.44 40-yard dash. Though many would have guessed we’d see Fields somewhere near the top of this quarterback class, clocking in at 4.44 with his 6’3” and 227-pound frame is ridiculous.
With the cancellation of the 2021 NFL Combine, we’ll have to settle for Fields’ unofficial 40-yard dash time for his evaluation. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes, the only first-round quarterback on the record with a faster 40-yard dash time is Robert Griffin III. He managed 383 rushing yards and five scores on the ground thanks to that blazing speed, with 20 missed forced tackles and 17 rushing attempts producing 10+ yards.
Fields was a standout in the 2020 NCAA season, but Ohio State’s shortened season left them the underdogs heading into the college football post-season. Thanks to a stunning performance in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson where Fields threw for 385 passing yards, six touchdowns and one interception, he helped to lead their roster to the College Football Championship. They wound up losing to Alabama (who coincidentally, shares Ohio State’s Pro Day on March 30th) 24 to 52.
It remains to be seen just where Justin Fields falls into play for NFL teams, with quarterbacks Zach Wilson, Trey Lance and Mac Jones all competing with him for early-first round draft capital. Fields has had an excellent Pro Day, between his speedy 4.44 and throwing session, where he’s been able to showcase his diverse abilities as a passer, including this dime on the run.
We’ll continue to track and provide his Pro Day data as it rolls in.
