How and what to watch for UTEP vs. No. 13 Kansas

We’re not sure why this game is getting played either.

For some strange reason, the No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks have decided to play the UTEP Miners on Thursday night at Allen Fieldhouse in one of the most random non-conference games you’ll ever see in March.

KU (18-8, 12-6 Big 12) has played one of the most challenging schedules in college basketball this year, adding Gonzaga and Creighton to a full league slate. They’re No. 19 in KenPom, No. 11 in the NET, and the Miners should be a bug on a windshield.

UTEP (12-10, 8-8 C-USA) gets to visit one of the great cathedrals in college basketball as well as get paid for it, so there’s no real downside here. The Miners slowly continue to improve under coach Rodney Terry, and will get plenty of community support if they can reach the higher plateaus of Conference USA. Souley Boum is a guard worth watching; he shoots over 40% from three-point range and averages 18.7 points per game. UTEP would for sure like to have him back next season.

  • UTEP is 4-1 ATS in their last five, but 0-5 in their last five on the road against the number.

The Best Bet

This should be treated as a tune-up game by the Jayhawks, and it’ll be the last game in The Phog for Marcus Garrett after his 17 seasons in Lawrence (though he can technically come back next year too!), Expect plenty of emotion and plenty of points. Enjoy the late paycheck, UTEP.

Pick: Kansas -17.5
