Best bets for 2021 NBA Slam Dunk Contest

Obi Toppin, Anfernee Simons and Cassius Stanley highlight this year’s AT&T Slam Dunk Contest.

Since we’re still in the midst of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the NBA decided to still have the All-Star Game and the events surrounding it, but with a new twist this season.

The events that we usually see on All-Star Saturday night such as the three-point contest, slam dunk contest, and skills challenge will now take place on the same night of the NBA All-Star Game, which is being held in Atlanta, GA on Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET.

The slam dunk contest will take place at halftime of the All-Star Game, which features an eclectic field of dunkers. The NBA tried to get Zion Williamson to participate in the dunk, but he passed on the event. Unlike previous years, where we had a good sense of who might win, this year’s contest is up in the air. The participants are Obi Toppin, Anfernee Simons, and Cassius Stanley.

We are going to give out a couple of picks for Sunday night’s competition as all odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.

Favorite Pick

Since we do not know the odds yet for dunk contest, its hard to know who is the considered the favorite to win. But my favorite to win it is Indiana Pacers rookie Cassius Stanley (+100). Now, a lot of people probably want Obi Toppin to win it as he is a New York Knick. But players who are 6-foot-9 and above, struggle sometimes in dunk contest. Unless your name is Dwight Howard or Aaron Gordon, then you are the exception to the rule.

Stanley has not played much in the NBA this season, but instead has spent time in the NBA G League with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. The rookie guard, however, has some high-flying dunks and serious bounce from his lone season at Duke. If you haven’t see them, check them out on YouTube.

Long Shot Pick

The obvious choice here is Anfernee Simons (+225), who we really haven’t seen dunk, not much, or if at all in the NBA. But if you search around on the interwebs, you will see that Simons had serious bounce back at IMG Academy. Toppin will likely be the favorite, which leaves Simons or Stanley to be the long shots for Sunday night’s dunk contest.
