Best bet for the 3rd overall pick in 2021 NFL Draft

We break down which bets we like for the third overall pick selected in this year’s draft.

Will Mac Jones drop outside of the top-10?

The San Francisco 49ers traded up to grab the coveted No. 3 pick because they want a quarterback. The question remains. which one? After their respective pro days, each of Mac Jones, Trey Lance, Justin Fields saw boosts in hype and odds. But, as we close in on the draft, the drumbeat continues for Jones to be the pick, while Lance seems to still be in the running, and Fields remains a distant third. The latest news has the 49ers choosing between Lance and Jones, per Ian Rapoport.

The rumors are all over the map, as Adam Schefter and others hear Jones is the pick. Rich Eisen has been told that Lance is the guy. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler doesn’t believe Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch haven’t tipped their hand to even the highest up executives of the team. Does this mean Fields is still in the running? It very well could.

Player Odds

Mac Jones -305
Trey Lance +200
Justin Fields +1000

Best bet

Trey Lance +200

Is Jones the guy? Maybe, but I find it hard to believe Shanahan would limit his offense by taking the one quarterback who is not a good rusher. His team recently lost the Super Bowl to a quarterback who is mobile in Patrick Mahomes. Does that make a mobile quarterback a lock? No, but Shanahan is a master of the run game. Just think if he had his quarterback, wide receivers and running backs all able to attack defenses on the ground.

I don’t think anybody other than a few choice 49ers know who they will take, which means the odds are likely too skewed toward Jones. That also means that Fields is still in the running, but we also know that Lance has been working with quarterbacks coach John Beck, who has close ties to Shanahan. Lance is likely learning Shanahan’s system as we speak and tried to show the skills needed in his pro days. No matter what, this pick is going to be a fun one on draft day.
