Post Positions and Morning Line Odds for the 2021 Kentucky Derby

A year removed from a COVID-19 delay, the Kentucky Derby is back for its annual May race. The 147th annual Run for the Roses will take place Saturday, May 1 at Churchill Downs.

The start of the Triple Crown usually runs the first weekend in May, but last year was pushed back to November. It resulted in the Belmont Stakes running first, the Kentucky Derby running second, and the Preakness running third, spread from June to October.

On Tuesday, the field was finalized and post positions were settled via blind draw, as the field for the 147th Run for the Roses was set this morning in Louisville.

The chalk is Essential Quality, who is the 2-1 choice according to the morning line odds from longtime Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. The horse is 5-0 career, including a win at the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year. He’ll be followed by Rock Your World and Florida Derby winner Known Agenda.

Known Agenda has one good thing going for him (24 Kentucky Derby winners have won the Florida Derby) and one bad (the No. 1 post position is known as somewhat of a curse for this race.
