Though the exact order remains unclear, NFL teams expect Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance to all come off the board during Day 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft. That scenario would mark just the fourth time in league history that five or more quarterbacks went in the first round.
But could another signal-caller hear his name called on Day 1? Stanford’s Davis Mills numbers among the prospects hoping to do so. Only once have six QBs gone in the opening round, but the demand for the position has reached a fever pitch.

Over the past decade, the NFL has increasingly polarized where it drafts quarterbacks. Prospects viewed as having even a semi-decent chance of becoming a long-term starter end up in the first round with most of the rest becoming relegated to “project” status for Day 3. Some still come off the board in the second and third rounds, but not nearly as often as in earlier eras.
For Davis Mills, that means sneaking into the first round remains a possibility. His pedigree as a high-school recruit and 13-game run with Stanford over the past two years could realistically convince a team near the end of Day 1 to pull the trigger à la Jordan Love in 2020.
At the same time, we’ve seen fringe QB prospects hyped as first-rounders fall into early Day 3 numerous times over the past decade: Matt Barkley, A.J. McCarron, Bryce Petty, etc. Mills could well fit into this group as well, making his odds for rounds four and five look enticing. With guys like Kellen Mond and Kyle Trask diluting the demand for prospects of Mills’ ilk, these rounds seem to hold the best value.
