Best bet for which round QB Kyle Trask will be drafted

We look at current odds and pick our best bet for which round we’ll see Florida QB Kyle Trask will be drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Will Dallas draft a QB?

As the 2021 NFL Draft approaches, most teams expect Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance to all hear their names called within the first 32 picks. Should that occur, it would mark just the fourth time in league history that at least five quarterbacks went in the opening round.

But will another signal-caller join them on Day 1? Florida’s Kyle Trask numbers among the prospects hoping to do so. Only once has six QBs gone in the opening round, but the demand for the position has reached a fever pitch.

Best bets

Around the turn of the century, NFL teams didn’t feel compelled to push quarterbacks up the draft board the way they have in recent years. That helps explains how future Hall of Famers such as Drew Brees and Russell Wilson remained on the board following the first round.

In the current landscape, any passer with even a semi-viable chance of becoming a long-term starter ends up going on Day 1. While a scant few will follow in the second and third rounds, the rest typically fall into the final day of the draft as “projects.”

Accordingly, for a non-elite QB prospect like Trask, the first round seems like a dicey proposition. Though teams will select them near the end of Day 1 — the Green Bay Packers took Jordan Love with the No. 26 overall pick last year — those prospects tend to have a higher physical upside than what Trask offers. More likely, Trask will hear his name called between the end of Day 2 and the start of Day 3 (rounds three and four). That tracks with the odds, and round four provides the better payoff of the two.
