The Baltimore Orioles will look to take a 2-0 series lead over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. ET. After having the season opener postponed on Thursday due to weather, the Orioles shutout the Red Sox 3-0 on Friday afternoon behind a solid start from starting pitcher John Means.
Means threw seven innings of shutout ball and had five strikeouts. Orioles rookie Ryan Mountcastle had most of the scoring, hitting a two-run double off of the Green Monster at Fenway. It was Mountcastle’s only hit of the day as he went 1-for-4.
On Saturday afternoon, Matt Harvey will be making his regular-season debut for the Orioles, while the Red Sox will have Tanner Houck on the mound. We’ll go over some ideal picks on DraftKings Sportsbook centered around the game here.
Orioles vs. Red Sox, 1:10 p.m. ET
Moneyline pick: Red Sox -186
Orioles starting pitcher John Means dominated the Red Sox in Friday afternoon’s regular season opener. Boston had multiple players not record a single hit, including Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, and Bobby Dalbec, who went a combined 0-for-9. That is less than ideal, especially with how things went for the BoSox last season.
Meanwhile, the Orioles did a good job in all three phases of the game, which helped them achieve the season win. They had nine hits, only six runners on base, and received two solid innings of relief from their bullpen. Saturday’s game appears to be a toss-up as we do not know what to expect from Matt Harvey or Tanner Houck. The last time we saw Harvey pitch in the majors, he had a record of 0-3 and 11.57 ERA with the Kansas City Royals in 2020. The O’s are hoping that Harvey can recapture that magic he once had with the Mets.
But it won’t be easy because the Red Sox have some sluggers in their lineup, who will not go hitless for the second-straight game. For Boston, Houck showed some promise in a lost 2020 season, where he had a 0.53 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. It probably will be another close game, where the Red Sox will need to cash in and get something going on offense.
Player Prop: J.D. Martinez to hit a home run (+410)
Veteran designated hitter J.D. Martinez was one of two Red Sox players to register a hit on Friday afternoon. The three-time Silver Slugger will try to improve on that in a few hours against Matt Harvey. The last time we saw Harvey pitch in the regular season, he did not look good with the Kansas City Royals. Baltimore is hoping that isn’t the case today, but for the Red Sox, they hope that Martinez can get a hold of a pitch.
In 10 games against the Orioles last season, Martinez hit .293/.370/.488 with a home run and seven RBI. Over his career, the 33-year-old is slashing .313/.414/.683 with 24 home runs and 65 RBI against Baltimore. Those 24 home runs are the most he has hit against any team in the majors.
