Fantasy impact of the Packers’ 2021 NFL Draft selections

After falling one game short of the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons, the Green Bay Packers entered the 2021 offseason more in need of roster tweaks than a more substantial remodeling. The team returns the reigning MVP, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as well as nearly every starter and key contributor on the league’s No. 1 scoring offense. Even at Rodgers’ age — he turns 38 in December — the Packers should still have everything required on that side of the ball to make another title run.

Even so, adding another pass catcher could make life a little easier for the offense, especially All-Pro wideout Davante Adams. The Packers haven’t selected a wideout during the opening three rounds since taking Ty Montgomery with the No. 94 overall pick in 2015. Even then, Montgomery went on to switch positions midway through his rookie contract. Whether general manager Brian Gutekunst breaks the cycle and elects to do choose a wide receiver early in the 2021 NFL Draft remains an open question.

Meanwhile, the defense has already undergone something of an overhaul during the offseason. Veteran defensive coordinator Mike Pettine departed Green Bay in January with former Los Angeles Rams assistant Joe Barry coming aboard to rework the defense. In terms of personnel, veteran linebacker Christian Kirksey and long-time cornerback Tramon Williams will not return with more massive changes expected to come during the draft. While Kevin King and Chandon Sullivan return to the secondary, the team needs to uncover a long-term answer at the position to pair with superstar Jaire Alexander. Such a prospect could come at the exclusion of an early-round offensive playmaker.

Fantasy football impact

The Packers landed former Clemson Tigers wide receiver Amari Rodgers in the third round to give whoever plays quarterback for this team next season a solid, young weapon. Green Bay does not have a clear No. 2 receiver behind Davante Adams, so there is potential for Amari Rodgers to prove his worth as a rookie. Like just about every pass catcher in this Packers offense, we need to see if Aaron Rodgers will be the quarterback before making a full projection.
