The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to dust themselves off after a rough Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies. First, they lost star centerfielder Ketel Marte to an apparent hamstring injury. Then they lost the game, 8-0, which was just the second time in franchise history that the Diamondbacks were shut out at Coors Field. The win snapped Colorado’s four-game losing streak.
Jon Gray will be on the hill for the Rockies. The righty was stellar versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 3, allowing just one run through five innings and striking out seven. He threw just 82 pitches but was removed from the game prior to the sixth inning due to cramps. The Diamondbacks will counter with Merrill Kelly. He didn’t possess great control in his first start of the season last week as he walked three Padres in four innings. Kelly issued just five walks in 31.1 innings last season. He ended up getting tagged with the loss in a 4-2 defeat.

The Diamondbacks have struggled to score in the early going; they have been held to three or fewer runs in four of their first six games. And now they will have to move forward without Marte for at least today. I expect the Rockies to feast on Kelly, who followed up a subpar spring training with that uneven 2021 debut against the Padres.

It’s kind of odd that Story doesn’t have a home run yet through six games. After connecting for more than 30 home runs in each of the past two full seasons and 11 homers in 59 games in 2020, it’s only a matter of time before he goes deep. It certainly doesn’t hurt that today’s game is at altitude in Denver. Plus, Story is 3-for-9 with a home run in his career versus Kelly.
