The Philadelphia Eagles signed former Wake Forest QB Jamie Newman as an UDFA following the 2021 NFL Draft. He joins a depth chart that includes 2020 second-round draft selection Jalen Hurts and vet Joe Flacco.
Newman opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns after deciding to transfer from Wake Forest to the University of Georgia. In his last season at Wake Forest, the 6-foot-3 QB completed 60.9% of his passes for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also had a career-high 574 rushing yards on 180 attempts and six touchdowns. Newman has solid arm strength and throws a great deep ball, which is perfect for an Eagles’ offense that has wide receivers who can stretch the field.
Fantasy football impact
Rookie
We shouldn’t expect much from Newman as a rookie this season. For him the name of the game will be development. Joe Flacco is the backup quarterback behind Hurts and will be the one playing if the second-year quarterback gets hurt. Newman will be QB3 or on the practice squad for the Eagles.
Long-term
If Newman improves and shows development this upcoming season, then he will be in competition for the backup job in 2022. As for fantasy football, Newman’s ceiling is a QB2. But if he needs to start, he could possibly give you 15-20 fantasy points just based on his skillset.
