There are only three games for the early state on Wednesday afternoon, with the first game beginning at 12:10 p.m. ET. The Baltimore Orioles will take on the New York Mets at Citi Field, while the Cincinnati Reds will play the Pittsburgh Pirates 25 minutes later. We are going to go over some top options on DraftKings and give out a few value picks to help you build your lineup.
Sonny Gray, Reds vs. Pirates ($9,000) — Gray is the highest-priced pitcher for the early slate and its for good reason as he has turned in back-to-back quality outings. Despite not registering a win yet this season (0-2), Gray still has an ERA of 3.92 and had a terrific start last week against the Chicago White Sox.
The veteran pitcher threw seven scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 walks, and struck out eight for a season-high 28.8 DKFP. It was the second consecutive start for Gray that scored at least 20 fantasy points or more. In seven games (six starts) against the Pirates, he has an ERA of 4.08 in 35.1 IP. While that might make you hesitant to start him, Gray is averaging 7.75 strikeouts per game this season, which is what you want to see for a starter at this price.
Taijuan Walker, Mets vs. Orioles ($8,600) — Walker has been an absolute gem of a third starter for the Mets this season, behind the likes of Jacob deGrom and Marcus Stroman. Walker has a 2-1 record and stellar career-best ERA of 2.38 through seven starts. The 28-year-old is coming off a tremendous start last week against the St. Louis Cardinals, when he scored 35.2 fantasy points (7.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 run, 8 strikeouts). The flame-throwing right-handed pitcher will face an Orioles’ squad that only strikes out 8.78 times per game and scores 3.81 runs a game.
Jose Ramirez, Indians vs. Cubs ($5,600) — Ramirez has been one of the Indians’ best offensive players this season and power hitters in MLB. Ramirez is hitting .261 with 10 home runs, 20 RBI, .911 OPS and 9.6 fantasy points per game. The 28-year-old went 1-for-3 with a solo home run on Tuesday night against the Cubs. In Cleveland’s last five games, Ramirez has scored double-digit fantasy points three times. He’ll be looking to make it a fourth-time against Chicago starter Zach Davies.
Jesse Winkler, Reds vs. Pirates ($4,900) — This was a tough choice between Winkler and his teammate in Nick Castellanos, who have both played essential roles in the Reds’ offense being one of the best in the majors this season. However, I decided to lean towards Winkler, who is showing to be a better hitter and valued lower than Castellanos.
This season, the 27-year-old right fielder leads the Reds in hitting at .374 with seven home runs and 19 RBI. He also has an OPS of 1.114, which is good for second in MLB and averaging 11.2 FPPG. Winkler has recorded a hit in five straight games and will be hitting second on Wednesday against the Pirates.
Matt Harvey, Orioles vs. Mets ($7,500) — Since we only have three games on Wednesday’s early slate, there aren’t many choices for value pitchers and hitters. However, if you decide that you want to play Gray in DFS, then Harvey would be a good No. 2 option at the pitcher spot. The veteran pitcher will be making his first-ever start against his old team the Mets today since being traded in 2018.
Harvey hasn’t been overpowering on the mound this season, but still has a record of 3-2 and ERA of 3.60. The 32-year-old pitcher has put up double-digit fantasy points in four consecutive outings (14.1 FPPG). His best start this season came against the New York Yankees on April 26, when Harvey posted a season-high (21.9 DKFP).
Freddy Galvis, Orioles vs. Mets ($4,200) — Despite his price skyrocketing up to $4,200 due to it being three games on the early slate, Orioles shortstop Freddy Galvis is a great value hitter. The veteran outfielder is hitting .284 with four home runs, 12 RBI, and an OPS of .824 (6.9 fantasy points per game).
Galvis has hit safely in 11 out of 12 games, which is what you want to see and need from your value players. This season against right-handed pitchers, the veteran is slashing .282/.325/.535 in 78 plate appearances.
