Boston’s Fenway Park will host the two best teams in the American League tonight as the Athletics (23-15) wrap up their series with the Red Sox (22-15). The A’s have won the first two games to take the title of the AL’s winningest team from Boston. Tonight’s finale will wrap up with the Sox’s Garrett Richards taking on Oakland’s Sean Manaea. Manaea threw a no-hitter against Boston in 2018.
Moneyline pick: Red Sox (-115)
It’s not that Oakland can’t sweep Boston at Fenway; it last occured in 2012. I just don’t think Boston’s lineup — with the likes of J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Alex Verdugo — will be held down again after scoring just three runs in the first two games of this set. Granted, Manaea has been generally great this year, but I think the Red Sox will salvage one game here. The over (9, -109) looks good to me.
Player Prop: Alex Verdugo OVER 0.5 runs (+111)
If Boston is going to break out, Verdugo is going to have a big role in that. The Manaea matchup has probably pushed this line into plus territory, but Verdugo has handled left-on-left plate appearances pretty well since coming over to the Red Sox. He doesn’t hit for much power in those ABs, but he is 35-for-114 (.307) against southpaws since the start of 2020. He’ll get on base near the top of the Red Sox’s lineup and wait for one of those big boppers to bring him home. Verdugo has scored 25 runs in 35 games.
