The third Saturday in May returns with fans for the first time in two years, as the 2021 Preakness Stakes heads to the starting gate at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday. The “Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” kicks off late Saturday afternoon in Louisville at Churchill Downs. It is the 13th race on the schedule, and is scheduled to start at approximately 6:47 p.m. ET.
It will air live on NBC Sports Network, and can be live streamed at NBCSports.com/live. If you don’t have a cable login to access the apps, you can get a free trial from YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now, FuboTV, or Sling TV to stream it. You can also download the Twin Spires app on Roku devices to watch all races from Churchill Downs for free.
The race is a Grade I stakes race with $1.5 million added to the purse. All entrants are three-year-old horses (all mares this year) traveling 9.5 furlongs, or 1 3/16 miles. Last year’s winner was Swiss Skydiver, who crossed in 1:53.28.
The under-investigation Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit opens as the favorite in this year’s race at 9/5. His Bob Baffert barn-mate Concert Tour, who did not run at Churchill Downs two weeks ago, is the second choice early at 5/2.
