Rombauer wins 2021 Preakness Stakes [VIDEO]

The 146th annual Run for the Black-Eyes Susans is a wrap and Rombauer has claimed victory.

As an 11-1 underdog, Rombauer roared down the home stretch of the 146th Preakness Stakes to claim the win. Midnight Bourbon was amongst the favorites, but finished second.

The controversial Medina Spirit fell back and finished third after falling off the pace after the turn for home.

The pace was a bit muted coming out of the gate, and on the back stretch Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit were blocking most of the field down the rail. Bourbon overtook Medina on the front stretch after the final turn, and the Kentucky Derby winner that will likely be disqualified due to doping violations in the future simply lost all speed.

But Rombauer surged with a glorious push to the outside, and it was never in doubt from the quarter pole to the wire.

It’s the first Preakness win for trainer Mike McCarthy, and for jockey Flavien Prat. Prat was the winner of the 2019 Kentucky Derby aboard Country House, but only after racing officials disqualified Maximum Security for a foul during the race.
