UPDATE: The Angels have scratched Shohei Ohtani from tonight’s lineup as the team’s starting pitcher. LHP Jose Quintana will now make the start, per Angels PR.

There’s usually not this much hype for a matchup between two teams hovering around .500, but there are usually not two Cy Young candidates facing off on teams like that either.

The Tampa Bay Rays come into this series with the Los Angeles Angels having lost four of their last seven games, but are coming off a win on Sunday. The Angels have lost three games over the same span, but lost on Sunday to the Seattle Mariners.

Shohei Ohtani breakdown

AL Cy Young odd: (+5000)
AL MVP odds: (+900)

Ohtani is definitely the least likely of the two to earn a Cy Young nod this season. His team is undefeated in games where he’s toed the rubber though. But still, he’s only pitched three times this season and has never made it more than five innings before getting pulled.

His most recent outing was his toughest, giving up four earned runs in a win over the Rangers. But he is a strikeout machine, earning 23 strikeouts over just 13.2 innings on the season.

Tyler Glasnow breakdown

AL Cy Young odd: +450

Glasnow doesn’t always get the win, with a 4-2 record on the season, but he’s got more in the tank than Ohtani does on the mound. In his six starts, his shortest outing would match Ohtani’s longest. Like his opponent, Glasnow is also averaging over a strikeout per inning, with 56 so far on the year and nearly 40 innings under his belt.

The Rays hurler is also coming in off one of the better outings of his season, with 10 Ks over seven innings of shutout baseball against the Oakland A’s last week.

Who will win?

Glasnow has the momentum behind him and is sure to pitch deeper into this game. If he can limit the damage against Mike Trout, he should be able to earn a win for his team here.
