Sunday update: DK Metcalf ran the 100 meters in 10.36, which you can watch here. He finished ninth in his heat and 15th overall and did not advance to the finals.
UPDATE: DK Metcalf drew the second heat and will be running at 3:40 p.m. ET, per NBC Sports. Peacock and USATF.tv will be live streaming his heat.
The Summer Olympics are two and a half months away, and qualifying is underway for a variety of events. The United States Olympic Trials are later this summer, but in the meantime, USA Track & Field is hosting its Golden Games. The event serves as a qualifying event for the Trials.
This is a big event for USATF, but doesn’t always get a ton of high profile press. This year, the NFL is getting involved. Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is running in the 100 meters, attempting to qualify for the Olympic Trials in June.
Metcalf impressed when he raced down Budda Baker last October over the span of 108 yards and it has inspired him to take a shot at Olympic glory. His odds are long, particularly given his lack of experience since high school. But nonetheless it will be fascinating to watch. He would automatically qualify for the Olympic Trials with a 10.05 time, and anything under 10.20 would likely get him there.
The Golden Games will include qualifying heats and then the finals. The 100m heats are at 3:32 p.m. ET and the finals are at 5:03 p.m. Peacock will stream live coverage from 3:15-6 and USATF.tv will stream coverage from 2-4:30 and resuming at 10. You can watch NBC’s coverage via live stream at NBCSports.com/live or on the NBC Sports App.
Metcalf will run in the prelims at 3:32 and NBC Sports thinks he’ll need a 10.44 to advance from there to the finals at 5:03 p.m.
