Since the introduction of women’s water polo to the Olympics in 2000, the United States has won a medal in each games, the only country to do so. They took down the gold in London in 2012 and Rio in 2016, and eight members of the 2016 roster return for Tokyo including captain Maggie Steffens and Melissa Seidemann.
There are 10 teams in the Olympics, split into two groups of five who will play a full round robin. The United States was drawn into Group B Russia, China, Hungary, and Japan. Four of those five will advance to the quarterfinals, with only one team being eliminated in group play.
From there it’s an eight-team, single elimination bracket to determine the three medal winners.
The USA will be preparing for the games via the 2021 FINA World League Super Final, which begins this afternoon in Athens. Spain, Kazakhstan and the hosts Greece will provide the group play challenge in this eight-team event.
Here are the complete odds from DraftKings Sportsbook for who will win the women’s water polo gold medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.
