How Tyler Glasnow’s injury impacts the AL Cy Young race, AL East divisiondivis

The Tampa Bay Rays will be without their ace pitcher with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow. We break down the betting impact on multiple markets.

The Tampa Bay Rays reported on Tuesday that starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow had an MRI that revealed a partial UCL and flexor strain (h/t Adam Berry). The AL Cy Young candidate was placed on the 10-day injured list, while a timeline for his potential return will reportedly be determined after more exams.

ESPN’s baseball insider Jeff Passan adds that the plan for Glasnow is to rehab without having to go under the knife for Tommy John surgery. The Rays’ ace has been one of the best pitchers in the American League, let alone the majors, with a record of 5-2 and 2.66 ERA in 14 starts.

With Glasnow done for the foreseeable future, it will shake up both the AL Cy Young and AL East division races. We are going to break down the odds for both courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook and what could possibly happen going forward.

AL Cy Young Race Impact

Before it was announced that Glasnow was placed on the 10-day IL, he was tied with White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn for the fourth-best odds (+1000) to win the award. That being said, it would not be a surprise to see Lynn’s odds possibly go up from +1000 to maybe +800 as he has been phenomenal for Chicago this season.

Glasnow’s injury could also open up the door for Orioles pitcher John Means, who has +2500 odds to win award or Blue Jays pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu, who has +3500 to make a considerable push before the All-Star break.

AL East Division Impact

The Rays have been one of the best teams in baseball with a 43-24 record in first place in the AL East. DraftKings Sportsbook had Tampa Bay listed at +115 to win the division before Glasnow’s injury was announced.

However, the Rays are only 3.5 games up on the Red Sox, who have a potent offense and surprisingly had the third-best odds to win the AL East (+350) behind the New York Yankees. If Glasnow is out for a significant amount of time or has to get season-ending Tommy John surgery, then it opens up the door for the Sox or even Blue Jays to win the East (+425 odds).
