After starting off the month of June with a 7-2 record, the Phillies have dropped two straight games against the Dodgers. Philadelphia has been outscored by two runs per game by Los Angeles, but have only managed to score two runs per game. Heading into this series, the Phillies were scoring 6.7 runs per game.
Philadelphia will try to salvage the series finale on Wednesday night with Zack Wheeler on the mound. Wheeler is a sleeper candidate for the NL Cy Young award and has been the team’s best pitcher this season. The 31-year-old had a dominating May, where he had an ERA of 2.08 in six starts. He has already started off this month on fire, allowing 2 earned runs in 15.1 IP.
This season, Wheeler has been solid on the road with a 3.38 ERA, 1-2 record and a .246 opponents batting average in five starts. Along those same lines, the Phillies are 2-3 in Wheeler’s road starts. However, the veteran starter has struggled in his four career starts against the Dodgers with a 1-2 record and 5.87 ERA.
With that being said, the best bet on the moneyline may be Los Angeles. Kershaw is 8-5 with an ERA of 3.39 and an opponents batting average of .214 in 14 starts. He has also played well at home this season with a 4-2 record and 3.07. If the Phillies have struggled to score runs on Gonsolin and Urias in the first two games, just imagine what it could look like versus Kershaw.
