In most international competitions, teams finishing third after the group stage standings would be eliminated from the tournament. The European championship works a bit differently, with all the third-place finishers still having a chance at making the knockout stage.
The six third-place finishers are compared against each other, with the top four going to the knockout round based on points. The same tiebreakers for separating teams within the group stage apply here, with goal differential and goals for usually being enough to break any ties.
Switzerland is officially the first third-place team to get into this part of the qualification process. The Swiss have four points after a 3-1 win over Turkey in the last game. They failed to get past Wales on goal differential in the group stage standings and will now wait on other results to learn their fate.
Here’s a look at the current standings for each Euro 2020 group with teams still alive for the third place finish. Groups A through D have wrapped up their group stage schedules. Groups E and F conclude on Wednesday.
