New York Mets pitcher Joey Lucchesi has a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, according to SNY’s Steve Gelbs. Tommy John surgery is a possibility, which would mean Lucchesi would be out for the year.
Lucchesi’s injury is yet another blow for the Mets, who have been dealing with a slew of injuries this year. Somehow, they’ve managed to remain in first place in the NL East.
The Mets pitcher started eight games out of 11 appearances, posting a 4.46 ERA. He was a key piece in the rotation for New York, which may look to the minor league system for another arm.
It’ll also make the Mets players for a pitcher at the trade deadline, although they were likely already in the market after Jacob deGrom’s scare. Expect New York to make calls on pitchers on losing teams, including Rangers ace Kyle Gibson and Twins pitcher Jose Berrios.
This injury will also bolster the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, who are chasing the Mets in the division race.
