England is heading to the knockout round after winning Group D with a 1-0 victory over Czech Republic in the final group stage match.
Raheem Sterling found the back of the net in the 12th minute to give England the early advantage. Sterling had hit the post minutes earlier, but made no mistake on this occasion. England only had five shots on goal to Czech Republic’s seven, but made the most of its chances.
Czech Republic failed to do much in front of goal, mustering only one shot on target. Alex Kral had a chance to equalize in stoppage time, but his shot flew over the goal. Czech Republic will have to wait for other results to shake out, but likely have enough points to make the knockout stage through the third-place qualification process.
Sterling has both of England’s goals in the competition, something which could be concerning for the team going forward. Harry Kane was expected to be the favorite to win the Golden Boot of the competition, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, but has yet to find the back of the net.
England will play its knockout game against the second-place team from Group F June 29 in London.
