After a 2-1 loss to Switzerland in Sunday’s friendly, the United States men’s soccer team is back in action June 3 in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal against Honduras. If USA wins, it will meet the winner of Mexico-Costa Rica in the final. Here are some players USA fans should be looking out for as the team continues to build towards the 2022 World Cup.
Giovanni Reyna - Borussia Dortmund
At 18, Reyna holds tremendous promise for USA. He’s already a dynamic passer and should continue to improve as an attacking player. The key for Reyna will be to master coach Gregg Berhalter’s system and mesh with the team’s other forwards.
DeAndre Yedlin - Galatasaray
Yedlin is potentially USA’s most versatile player, being able to fit in as a winger, attacking midfielder or outside defender. He’s got a wealth of experience playing in big matches for Seattle Sounders and Premier League clubs Tottenham and Newcastle United.
Sergino Dest - Barcelona
After choosing USA over Netherlands to continue his international career in October 2019, the 20-year old Dest went to Barcelona from Ajax to keep his club career going. He’s a capable defender and will occasionally make outside runs to support attacks. Like Reyna, Dest can still improve tremendously while having a high floor.
Tyler Adams — RB Leipzig
Amid all the attacking talent on USA, Adams may be the most important player on the pitch. His ability to hold things together in the midfield is crucial for USA to be successful against stronger teams down the line. Adams helps USA maintain its shape and keep things in the opponent’s third.
Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Zack Steffen (Manchester City)
Pulisic is coming off a Champions League victory vs. Manchester City, but USA is unlikely to use him unless circumstances require it. Pulisic is more likely to make an appearance if the team makes the final. The same goes for City goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who didn’t play in the UCL final but was among the substitutes available.
Here’s the full 23-man USMNT roster for the CONCACAF Nations League.
