5 p.m. update: Preakness winner Rombauer improved from 8-1 to 7-1.
The final jewel of the 2021 Triple Crown is here, and the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes, but with a bit of a weaker field than you would normally to wrap up the biggest triumvirate of horse races in America.
The current winner of the Kentucky Derby Medina Spirit, as well as the likely soon-to-be winner Mandaloun due to a second drug test failure, both won’t be participating. Trainer Bob Baffert is banned from the track, and won’t be allowed to enter any horses by the New York Racing Association. He’s also been banned from Churchill Downs for two years, and won’t be anywhere near the event as well.
Preakness winner Rombauer has entered the field, and will run the 1.5 mile course in the leg of the Triple Crown, but the morning line favorite is the fourth-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby Essential Quality. EQ was also the chalk at the Derby, but failed to close effectively in his first career loss after five wins to open his career.
