With the success the United States has had in beach volleyball since the introduction of the sport to the Olympics 1996, it might surprise some casual fans that Team USA has never won a gold medal in the women’s indoor version of the sport.
The closest the USA has come is two silver medals, falling to Brazil 3-1 in the gold medal match in both 2008 and 2012, and a loss at home to China 3-0 in 1984. They picked up the Bronze in Rio
Outside hitter and team captain Jordan Larson will be the player the USA leans on when they get out of system. She won the national championship with Nebraska in 2006, a world championship gold with Team USA in 2014, and every honor you can think of at the international club level. But at age 34, this is likely Larson’s third and final go round looking for Olympic gold.
A crushing pair of losses in the 2018 World Championships to China and the Netherlands kept the US out of the medal round, but America seems to be making a comeback in the Volleyball Nations League in 2021 that’s being held in Italy. They’re 8-0 in pool play so far, and have dropped only one set. That competition will wrap up June 25th, giving the team about a month to prepare for their final
Here are the complete odds from DraftKings Sportsbook for who will win the indoor women’s volleyball gold medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.
