How the public is betting HR Derby first round matchups

The 2021 Home Run Derby is here and has a strong lineup as always, but this time around Los Angeles Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani is the main attraction. Ohtani is the favorite to win the event according to DraftKings Sportsbook at +250. Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo is second at +450.

Here’s how the public is betting on the first round of Monday’s Derby at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Salvador Perez vs. Pete Alonso

Alonso (-200): 98% handle, 85% bets
Perez (+160): 2% handle, 15% bets

Matt Olson vs. Trey Mancini

Olson (-190): 93% handle, 58% bets
Mancini (+155): 7% handle, 42% bets

Shohei Ohtani vs. Juan Soto

Ohtani (-180): 98% handle, 79% bets
Soto (+150): 2% handle, 21% bets

Joey Gallo vs. Trevor Story

Gallo (-160): 91% handle, 68% bets
Story (+140): 9% handle, 32% bets

Ohtani, Gallo, Alonso and Olson are getting an overwhelming amount of money in their respective matchups, commanding more than 90 percent of the handle. Olson’s matchup with Baltimore Orioles 1B Trey Mancini is the closest in terms of number of bets, with the Oakland A’s star getting 58 percent of all wagers. Colorado Rockies SS Trevor Story is getting some backers as well in his matchup with Gallo, taking 32 percent of all wagers.

Ohtani, Gallo, Alonso and Olson have the top four odds to win the Derby on DraftKings Sportsbook, so these splits make sense among the betting public. Washington Nationals star Juan Soto could be a sleeper candidate given how much of the public is backing Ohtani. Soto is only getting two percent of the money in his matchup.
