Updated look at AL Cy Young race during All-Star break

Gerrit Cole remains favorite despite struggles with substance crackdown. Can he hang on to win the award? We go over the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook.

With the first half of the 2021 MLB season in the books and currently sitting at the All-Star break, it is a good time to look at the AL Cy Young race in the American League. Before the season began, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole was the favorite to win the MVP with +350 odds.

Despite some struggles heading into the All-Star break, Cole still appears to be the betting favorite to win the AL Cy Young award with -115 odds. However, the Yankees’ ace has stiff competition from Carlos Rodon, Lance Lynn, and Chris Bassitt. Here, we’ll take a look at our favorite picks to win AL Cy Young award. All odds are courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.

Favorite pick — Carlos Rodon (+225)

Cole has pitched well this season for the Yankees, but I believe that the AL Cy Young award will be awarded to Carlos Rodon, who has been one of the best pitchers in the majors in 2021 and also has one of the no-hitters. This season, the 28-year-old was named to his first MLB All-Star Game. He also has a 7-3 record and 2.31 ERA, along with 130 strikeouts in 89.2 IP (15 starts). Rodon and Lance Lynn have both played instrumental roles in the White Sox having one of the best records in baseball. That should count for something and Rodon is a perfect candidate to bring home some hardware.

Darkhorse/sleeper pick — Chris Bassitt (+3000)

A lot of the Athletics’ second half success will hinge on the arm of starting pitcher Chris Bassitt. Oakland’s ace has the sixth-best odds to win the AL Cy Young behind the likes of Nathan Eovaldi, Shane Bieber, Lynn, Rodon, and Cole. This season, Bassitt has a record of 10-2, 3.28 ERA, along with 118 strikeouts in 118 IP. As things currently stand, Oakland is only 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West. If the A’s can catch the Astros, then Bassitt should get some votes for Cy Young.
