How much will the winner of the 2021 British Open take home

UPDATE: Collin Morikawa won the British Open to claim the $2,070,000 in prize money. Jordan Spieth finished second, two shots behind, to claim $1,198,000.

The winner of the 2021 British Open will get up to $2,070,000 cut of a $11.5 million total purse from the original major after the total pool was raised by $750,000 from the 2019 event (2020 was canceled due to COVID-19). The Open Championship is tied with the Masters as the lowest paying championship among the four majors. Second place will take home up to $1,198,000.

The R&A announced that If more than 70 professional golfers qualify for the final two rounds, additional prize money would be added and prize money would be decreased by $125 per qualifying place above 70 to a minimum of $13,500. 77 golfers made the cut, with 75 of them being professionals and two amateurs.

This year, The Masters purse was $11.5 million, the PGA Championship was at $12 million, and the U.S. Open was $12.5 million. The Players Championship has continued hiking its purses in recent years to solidify its status as a quasi-fifth major and paid out a whopping $15 million in 2021.

This year’s British Open is headed into the final round on Sunday with Louis Oosthuizen sitting at -12 through 54 holes. Collin Morikawa trails him by one shot, Jordan Spieth trails by three, and Corey Conners and Scottie Scheffler trail by four to round out the top five.
