The Gold Cup 2021 competition has advanced to the knockout stage after a high-scoring group stage. The quarterfinals take place July 24 and 25 for the final eight teams.

The tournament featured 16 teams playing in four groups with eight advancing to the knockout stage, which starts at quarterfinals. The semifinals will play on July 29 and the final is August 1. Saturday, July 24

  • Qatar vs. El Salvador

How El Salvador got here: They were the first team to secure a spot in the knockout stage, but they came up short in their attempt to win the group. They lost 1-0 to Mexico in the group stage finale to fall to second place by one point.

How Qatar got here: Qatar won two games and finished with a draw in another to claim the top of Group D. They secured the group by beating Honduras in the final round of group play.

  • Mexico vs. Honduras

How Mexico got here: El Tri struggled to open the Gold Cup, but handled their business late. After a stunning 0-0 tie with Trinidad, Mexico rolled 3-0 over Guatemala and then edged out El Salvador on a Luis Rodríguez goal in the 26th minute to win the group.

How Honduras got here: Honduras won two games to take a lead in Group D, only to lose the group finale to Qatar and finish in second place.

Sunday, July 25

  • Costa Rica vs. Canada

How Canada got here: The Canadians stormed past Haiti and Martinique in their first two group stage games, but ran into a brick wall that was the USMNT defense in the final contest. Canada failed to score a goal for the first time of the 2021 competition and had to settle for the second spot in the group.

How Costa Rica got here: Costa Rica swept group play, including a win over Jamaica to clinch the top spot. They had a +4 goal differential in group play.

  • United States vs. Jamaica

How United States got here: Gregg Berhalter’s new-look squad did not convince many in the opening match against Haiti, but the Americans quickly turned things around with six goals against Martinique. They scored in the first minute against Canada and held onto the 1-0 lead for the whole game, cementing the top spot in the group.

How Jamaica got here: Jamaica won two games to secure a berth in the knockout stage but lost their third game of group play, to Costa Rica, to finish second in the group.
