Trying to get into the mind of New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is a perilous endeavor. Payton is a good at zigging while others are zagging and now that Drew Brees has retired expect a whole lot of zigging.
Last season Payton started Taysom Hill over Jameis Winston when Drew Brees was out despite many believing he’d roll with Winston. The same is happening now, as reports had Winston as the favorite to take over, but now we are beginning to hear the opposite. According to sources, the Saints will go with Hill as the starter, per The Boston Globe’s Ben Violin. Violin believes Hill’s dual threat ability is too good for Payton to throw to the side. He’ll be ready to move on to Winston if Hill can’t get the job done, but the more gadgets the better for Payton.
Hill helped the Saints to a 3-1 record with Brees out and averaged 208.5 yards passing, 1 touchdown and .5 interceptions while rushing 9.8 times a game for 52.3 yards and a touchdown. Four rushing touchdowns to four passing touchdowns in those four matchups isn’t exactly want you want to see, but it got the job done. Of course, they beat Atlanta twice, Denver once and lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in that stretch.
